2025 Guide – Sticking To Goals & Habit Building

The New Year – the time when we all become goal-setting ninjas! But did you know that most of us will give up on these goals before the end of January!

These are a few common mistakes that can lead you astray and some tips to help you
conquer your 2025!

Goal Pacing:

Are you feeling the fire of ambition burning within you, eager to tackle everything at once? It’s exhilarating to dream big! However, diving headfirst into multiple transformations can feel like trying to swim against a tidal wave. The truth is, managing numerous changes at the same time can be overwhelming.

Picture this: you’re inspired to lace up your running shoes, overhaul your diet, jump into a vibrant fitness class, dive into a new hobby, supercharge your hydration, and cut back on that beloved coffee. Each of these goals is a beacon of potential, yet when you try to juggle them all, they can easily turn into a chaotic mess. Instead of spinning in circles, why not harness that energy and channel it into focused bursts of change? Start with just 2-3 targeted habits over a 4-6 week period.

This method is not just about pacing; it’s about setting the stage for extraordinary transformations that will stand the test of time. As you cultivate these habits and watch them flourish into natural parts of your daily routine, you’ll be ready to weave the next set of goals into your life.

Not seeing results soon enough:

Not witnessing swift results can be a frustrating hurdle on your journey. The slow march of progress might feel like a heavy weight at times, especially when comparing yourself to others. But remember, each person is on their own journey, navigating through challenges at their own unique pace. The most empowering truth to remember, is that the only way to truly abandon your goals is to give up. While it might seem like progress is crawling, when you take a moment to reflect on how far you’ve come, the progress can be astonishing!

Celebrate those small victories; they are the stepping stones to your ultimate success. Track your journey—whether it’s through journaling, visual aids, or sharing your milestones with friends. This will help you realise your progress and keep your spirits high, even when the road feels long! Keep pushing forward, because the adventure is just as important as the destination!

Not being specific enough:

You’ve probably heard the saying before: being specific is key to success. The more detailed your plan for reaching a goal, the easier your journey will be. Take, for example, your goal of getting fitter. If you head to the gym without a clear plan, you might spend 20 minutes wandering on the treadmill, feeling lost and uncertain, and end up going home without a workout.

Or you might try random exercises, hoping for results but not really knowing what to do. On the other hand, if you clearly define your goals and the steps to achieve them, success feels much more achievable. For instance, if you want to lose weight, set a specific fat loss target for each week.

Plan out three full-body workouts and include 20 minutes of cardio. This way, you’ll stay on track. The clearer your intentions, the easier it will be to follow your path. Try scheduling your workouts for certain days and times, deciding how much weight you want to lose, and creating a timeline for your goals. This kind of clarity can greatly impact your progress toward your goals for 2025!

Habit stacking:

This works well with Goal Pacing, say your aim in January was to go to the gym 3 times a week, by February you’re consistent, and ready to start improving your recovery by stretching. You can tag this new habit (stretching) onto an existing habit (gyming 3x a week), this technique is called habit stacking. Habit stacking is like building a tower of habits, where each block supports the next! Imagine it’s New Year’s, and you’re all pumped to hit the gym three times a week.

Fast forward to February, and you’re crushing it as a gym-goer. You’re now ready embark on your next goal of improving flexibility. Here’s the magic of habit stacking; you seamlessly blend your new stretching habit with your consistent gym visits. After your workout, add 10 minutes of stretching to finish. This is a great way to effortlessly add in a new habit with minimal effort. So, every time you step into the gym, you’re not just ticking off a checklist; you’re creating a chain of habits that work together like a well-oiled machine!

Try using a habit tracker to visualise your habits!

Accountability:

This is often overlooked but can help immensely especially when first starting. Working towards a goal with someone can be a great way to keep each other accountable, and help to stay motivated. Also telling people about your goals, and chatting with them about your journey can help not only to keep you accountable but to feel supported too. Additionally, having a coach or someone to guide you will keep you accountable and also take out the guesswork of how to reach your goals.
